Skunk City at the Xtreme Tournament on Johns Lake
January 4, 2009
Well, I skunked it up pretty good at the Xtreme Tournament yesterday. I went into it thinking 15 pounds and ended up weighing in 3 little fish. It started out just as planned as I pulled in 2 keepers within the first 3 casts, but the rest were all dinks.
I had delusions of grandeur when I pulled in a 4 and a 6 pounder in practice. I even left them alone for 2 days after that. The fishing was tough for everyone and the winner only weighed in 11 pounds with 3 fish but one of those was an 8 pounder. There’s always next time I guess. I suck.
I always start second guessing myself after a day like today, but I really got to get better at having a plan and sticking to it.
From here on out, I’m fishing the Harris Chain to find some spots for the Weekend Series tournament.

That’s too bad man. I don’t fish tourneys, but I hear this story all too often. Some people choose not to prefish because they end up catching all their best fish in practice and goose egg when it matters. You don’t suck though. You have the photos that prove otherwise.

Thanks, but I think people who don’t prefish are just plain lazy. I’m a firm believer that the harder you work the luckier you get.

Up here in Yankee land it isn’t a “Skunk” unless you catch 0 bass or 0 keeper bass. If I were to catch shorts in a tournament I would not consider that a “Skunk” but some would.
Good Luck next time. Consider yourself lucky just to be fishing open water, especially with a realistic shot at a 10lb class fish.

Thanks BP. I just wish I can find the hawgs all the time. I was on a roll with a 1rst and a 4th in the previous 2 tournaments. This one just a shocker and I really expected to catch’em good.
At least the spawn will be starting in the next couple of weeks and definitely lots of 10’s to had out there.

Tough break, bud. But like you said – there is always next time and I am sure you don’t suck – sometimes the fish just don’t cooperate.

Hey man I highly doubt you suck. Bass fishing is something VERY unpredictable! Just the other day I was watching City Limits Fishing with Mike Iaconelli (who is an AMAZING fisherman), and he was having the worst luck ever on the potomac river. Mike was getting really frustrated nothing was going right for him (the cameraman even accidentally broke his favorite rod!!!!) Long story short Mike finally finds a pattern and all of the sudden everything is going right! I’m sure if you just keep on fishing you’ll get numerous rewards but sometimes you get a lot of things you don’t want to happen! Just roll with the punches!

I just watched that City Limits episode too. I’ve got it set to automatic record on my DVR along with every other fishing show. I think I need to be more positive, but it’s hard sometimes.
I just prefished the Harris Chain yesterday and only caught 3 fish and I fished from sun up until sun down. I could’ve kept on going, but ran out of daylight.
The fish should be prespawn and maybe even spawning in a couple of weeks when the tourney is.
Anyways, thanks for the encouragement everyone. My goal is to win a BWS event this year and it would be great if it was the first one.
